CHAIM POTOK
This excerpt from the author's novel The Gift of Asher Lev is signed by him in blue ink
Typescript signed: "Chaim Potok/ 3 June '91", 1p, 8½x11. Headed: "An excerpt from/ THE GIFT OF ASHER LEV/ by/ CHAIM POTOK". In Part: "Afterward I lived in Paris, in the same apartment where I painted the Brooklyn Crucifixion. I married Devorah, and we moved to the Rue des Rosiers...I made many drawings and paintings of Devorah and Rocheleh, but I kept most of them for my own collection and would not show or sell them. I make many drawings and paintings of Paris and of the old ones in our neighborhood...." The Gift of Asher Lev was published in 1990, 23 years after Chaim Potok (1929-2002), born Herman Harold Potok, had emerged as a prominent figure on the American literary scene with The Chosen (1967). The Gift of Asher Lev focuses on a devout Ladover Hasid who has become an internationally known painter. The book was the seventh of Potok's eight novels. The author/rabbi also wrote non-fiction works, short stories, and plays that offered in-depth looks into Jewish culture. His debut novel The Chosen sold over 3 million copies. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
