Typed Letter signed: "Chaim Suller", 1 page, 8½x11. New
York, N. Y., 1963 September 23. On letterhead of the Morning Freiheit
to Rockwell Kent, c/o Mr. H. K. Thompson, Jr. In full: "Permit me to
say many thanks to you for such rich and memorable hours I am spending now
reading your 'Greenland Journey'. The members of my family and I shall cherish
this gift for many years to come. My very best wishes for your good health".
Chaim Suller (1903-1998) was for 30 years editor of the left-wing
Yiddish paper Morning Freiheit, until it ceased publication in 1988.
Suller, born in the Russian Empire in what is now independent Belarus, was a
Marxist, but a Marxist willing to criticize the Soviet Union, especially for
its persecution of Soviet Jews. He was a patron of Jewish educational
institutions, and a director of Camp Kinderland. Rockwell Kent was
a noted American realist painter and severe critic of American foreign policy.
