Printed Image signed: "Shalom/Chaim Topol". B/w, 4x5¾. Stage, screen and television actor Chaim Topol, born in Tel Aviv in 1935, was the first Israeli actor to be nominated for an Academy Award. Nominated for his role as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Topol, who was serving in the Israeli army at the time of his Oscar nomination, got a leave to attend the Awards ceremony in Hollywood. He had previously played the role over 400 times on the London stage, and Topol would later tour the U.S. in a revival of the play (1980) and he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor (Musical) for a revival of Fiddler in 1991. The actor, who made his film debut in 1961 (I Like Mike), also appeared in such films as Cast a Giant Shadow (1966), Flash Gordon (1980) and For Your Eyes Only (1981). His best known TV role was as Berel Jastrow in the TV miniseries, The Winds of War (1983), and its sequel, War and Remembrance (1988). Light impressions (not evident head on) at upper background.
