American historian Charles Austin Beard (1874-1948) was best known to the reading public for The Rise of American Civilization (1927, two volumes) and its two sequels, written in collaboration with his wife, Mary Ritter Beard, a historian in her own right. Also noted for American Government and Politics (1910), Beard argued the controversial thesis that the US Constitution was a counter-revolutionary document designed to reign in the radical tendencies unleashed by the Revolution. His A Charter for Social Sciences in the Schools (1932). greatly influenced the way in which history was taught. Binding holes at right edge. Toned. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
