To: "Dear Mr. Hampton," In full: "It is impossible for me, I am sorry to say, to attend the dinner held in memory of Markham. In these hours of world madness, it is encouraging to know that his affirmations of human values have not fallen to earth unnoted. Yours sincerely," American historian Charles Austin Beard (1874-1948) was best known to the reading public for The Rise of American Civilization (1927, two volumes) and its two sequels, written in collaboration with his wife, Mary Ritter Beard, a historian in her own right. Also noted for American Government and Politics (1910), Beard wrote a number of books on the relationship between economic interests and politics as well as A Charter for Social Sciences in the Schools (1932), which greatly influenced the way in which history was taught.
