CHARLES A. LINDBERGH
Lindbergh and seven other signers, including Alan Winslow (first US Air Service pilot to down a German plane in World War I), are shown with humorist Will Rogers in a 14x11 photo.
Photograph signed: "C.A. Lindbergh", "Alan F. Winslow" and six others, not by Rogers. Sepia, 14x11 overall, image 12¼x8¼ (one surface). Lindbergh is seated on the steps of a columned building with eight others. Signed by all men pictured except humorist Will Rogers. LINDBERGH became the first to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, New York to Paris, May 20-21, 1927. WILL ROGERS first met Lindbergh in San Diego after the flight. After everyone told Lindbergh what an inspiration he was, Rogers told him: "That's applesauce but the one record that will remain unsurpassed is that you are the first man to take a ham sandwich to Paris." The next day Rogers and Lindbergh flew in a Ford Trimotor and a lasting friendship developed between them. ALAN F. WINSLOW was the first pilot of the US Air Service to shoot down a German aircraft in World War I, on April 14, 1918. (American pilots had scored kills before, but as flyers for the French air force.) The other signers merit further research. Tip of upper left corner missing. Lightly rippled and soiled. Overall, fine condition.
