CHARLES A. LINDBERGH. TLS: "Charles A. Lindbergh", 1p, 8x11. Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, 1944 March 2. To Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Frank Murphy. In full: "I am forwarding the two autographed books under separate cover [not present]. I apologize for this long delay in obtaining them. Our own copies are out of reach in storage, and consequently, I have had to send the best I could obtain from the publisher." The autographed books that CHARLES A. LINDBERGH sent to Murphy were most likely copies of We, the story of his solo transatlantic flight, written upon his return from France in 1927 and the only book he had written up to that point. During WWII, Lindbergh was a consultant to the Ford Motor Company and United Aircraft, for which he accompanied 50 combat missions in the Pacific. While working for Ford, Lindbergh, born in Detroit, lived in Bloomfield Hills, a suburb of Detroit. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940, FRANK MURPHY served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court until his death in 1949. Murphy had previously served as Mayor of Detroit (1930-1933) and Governor of Michigan (1936-1938). Lightly creased, slightly soiled right blank edge. Fine condition.
