CHARLES A. LINDBERGH. TLS: "Charles A. Lindbergh", 1p, 8¼x10. Switzerland, 1967 July 20. To Warner E. Gilmore, General Manager, Hotel Indonesia, Djakarta, Indonesia. In part: "Naturally I am following the Sultan's suggestion in regard to postponing the trip to Indonesia. I was ready to accompany him on his July 20th expedition, and personally would have enjoyed very much doing so...I am glad it was postponed. I hope very much though that there will be another opportunity as I am fascinated with Indonesia in many ways and would like to know the country and the people better...I can not over-emphasize my appreciation to you for the great assistance you gave me during the weeks I spent in Indonesia. Your ability, initiative, tact, and contact with members of the government were of the greatest value. I have already informed Pan American officers of this fact...." In 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic. From 1954-1974, Lindbergh embarked on conservation and wildlife preservation expeditions. He later recalled his 1967 trip to Indonesia mentioned in this letter (from "Lindbergh & Conservation" by Alden Whitman, "The New York Times", June 23, 1969): "I've been active, too, in Indonesia. I've been there twice, first in 1967, in an effort to deal with the critical situation of one-horned Javan rhinoceros. There are only a few of them left in Udjung Kulon, their only habitat, because they are widely hunted for their horns. It is widely believed in Asia that powdered horn from this rhinoceros will surely restore a man's virility, and this superstition is enough to have reduced the herd to between 20 and 25. I visited the Udjung Kulon-I never did see a rhino, though-and was able to understand the problems of guarding the rhino preserve from poachers. Now, after talking to Indonesian officials who want to save the animal and with some help from the World Wildlife Fund, I think we've got the problem of guarding the remaining rhinos from hunters in hand." Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "r" in Charles, else fine condition.
