In part: "I am fascinated with the country [Indonesia] and its peoples, and the problems they face in our fluxing modern world. The impingement of West on East and East on west is tremendously interesting to me, and I do not know southeastern Asia at all well. Whenever the opportunity arises, I would like to spend some weeks living and driving around Java, and possibly around some of the other islands. As you know, I don't require entertainment. I am primarily interested in a people's routine ways of life-more in the ordinary than in the spectacular, for I find the ordinary of far greater basic significance. To observe the ordinary effectively, you must live in an ordinary way yourself. (You don't get to know soldiers if you carry stars on your shoulders when you meet them.) Please convey my best wishes to my friend Sri Budoyo, and to the Sultan if the opportunity arises. Tell them I am keeping in contact with the Udjung Kulon expeditions, and with other developments in fields both of wild life and of aviation--and watching all news from Indonesia...."
