CHARLES ANDERSON DANA
Two years before his death, the veteran New York journalist tells a
longtime acquaintance that they would have a great story to tell, "but we will
never have time to tell it."
Autograph Letter signed: "C. A. Dana", 1 page, 5x8. New
York City, 1895 February 23. On letterhead of the New York Sun to
"My dear Mr. Bonner", in full: "Thanks for your kind and
cheering note. It would revive an old fellow, if he was tired to death. Well,
you and I have seen a great many things, and, if we could tell the whole story,
it would be a surprise. But we will never have time to tell it. Yours
faithfully". Charles Anderson Dana (1819-1897) was the city and later
managing editor of Horace Greeley's New York Tribune (1847-1862) and
served as President Abraham Lincoln's Assistant Secretary of War
(1863-1865). Used by Secretary of War Stanton as a special investigative
agent, called by President Lincoln "the eyes of the administration," he
uncovered much corruption, but he strongly defended General U. S. Grant from
hostile rumor-mongers, and the men became friends. The friendship ended when
Dana denounced corruption on the Grant Presidential administration, leading to
threats of a libel suit. From 1868 until his death in 1897, Dana was
part-owner and editor of the New York Sun. toned. Corners lightly
worn and creased. Normal mailing folds. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine
