New York Sun editor and part-owner Charles A. Dana signed this manuscript letter to former U. S. Attorney General Wayne MacVeagh, on Sun stationery, in 1886. In it, he invites MacVeagh to stay at his home for a night.
Manuscript letter signed "C.A. Dana." in black ink. 2 pages, 5x8, 1 sheet folded, front and verso, on New York Sun stationery. April 11, 1886. Addressed to the Honorable Wayne MacVeagh. Letter in full, written in purple ink: "My dear McVeagh: The ladies of my household suggest that, as you are a sort of wandering Christian, it might be a good action to offer you hospitality next Tuesday, not merely for the banquet, but for the whole night. There is a room in the house entirely at your service, and there some ladies, who will [illegible] have the felicity of seeing you at dinner, will have hope of the enjoyment of a little conversation with you at breakfast. Yours faithfully,". American lawyer WAYNE MacVEAGH (1833-1917), born Isaac Wayne MacVeagh, served in the Union army as an infantry captain and cavalry major during the American Civil war and, later, as President James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur's Attorney General (1881-1882). CHARLES A. DANA (1819-1897), born Charles Anderson Dana, was the city and later managing editor of Horace Greeley's New York Tribune (1847-1862) and served as President Abraham Lincoln's Assistant Secretary of War (1863-1865). From 1868 until his death in 1897, Dana was part-owner and editor of the New York Sun. Lightly toned, soiled and foxed. Rust stain from paper clip in top left corner. Rounded corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
