CHARLES B. HANFORD and MARIE DROFNAH
Autograph Sentiment signed by him in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1903, and
signed on verso on the following day by his wife and acting partner, Marie
Drofnah (Hanford spelled backwards).
Autograph Sentiment signed: "I am very truly yours/Charles B.
Hanford/Grand Forks N. D./Feb. 5th 1903", 6½x4. Ink note (unknown hand):
"Taming of the Shrew." Also signed on verso: "With best wishes I
am/Sincerely Yours/Marie Drofnah/February 6, 1903". Actor and sometime
manager CHARLES B. HANFORD (1859-1926), known for his Shakespearean
roles, played theater stages throughout the US. Because of his knowledge
of set design, Hanford worked with Thomas Edison during World War I, designing
camouflage for US troops and ships. In 1885, Hanford married Mariella T.
Bear, who used the stage name of MARIE DROFNAH (Hanford spelled
backwards). The couple performed together on tour. Who's Who in Music and
Drama described her as possessing "an extensive classical repertoire." They
were not co-stars; Mr. Hanford seems always to have received more prominent
billing. Lightly toned and creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso, face.
Otherwise fine condition.
