CHARLES RANGEL
The Harlem Congressman signs a brief letter on his House stationery.
Typed Letter signed: "Charles B. Rangel" as US Representative, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D. C., 1973 June 21. On his personal Congressional letterhead to Robert Orth, Sublette, Kansas. In full: "I am in receipt of your recent letter requesting an autographed picture for your collection. In keeping with that request, enclosed please find same. With best wishes, I am very truly yours". Charles Bernard Rangel (1930-2025), a former assistant U.S. District Attorney in New York, was elected to the State Assembly in 1966. In 1970, he faced off against incumbent Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Congress in New York City's 15th Congressional District. Winning the seat over the 13-term Congressman in the general election, Rangel served the people of Harlem without a serious threat to his seat until 1994, when he faced Councilman Adam Clayton Powell IV, the son of his former rival. Rangel again was victorious, winning both the primary and 97 percent of the vote in the general election. In the current Congress, Rangel, a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, was the first African-American to chair the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. Corners lightly creased. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
