The former mayor and State Senator from Missouri signs this First Day Cover

Charles Bertan Wheeler, Jr. (b. 1926) is a Missouri politician. After graduating from University of Kansas with his M.D. in 1950, Wheeler joined the US Air Force, serving until July 1953 as a Captain and Flight Surgeon to the original group of the Thunderbirds, the Air Force aerial acrobatic team. Later he earned a law degree from University of Missouri in Kansas City. In 1957, he became an Associate Pathologist and Director of Laboratories at Kansas City General Hospital. He founded Wheeler Medical Laboratories in 1963. He served two consecutive terms as mayor of Kansas City from 1971-1979. During his tenure he oversaw the financing and construction of both the Kemper Arena and the Bartle Hall Convention Center. The combination of the two enabled the city to host the 1976 Republican National Convention. In 2003 he was elected to the Senate to represent Missouri's 10th District and served one term until 2007. Wheeler was the only physician in the Missouri State Senate. Having authored Doctor in Politics in 1974, Wheeler is a frequent lecturer and speaker. Toned. Corners rounded.
