CHARLES "BARON MORAN" WILSON
Winston Churchill's personal wartime physician responds to an autograph request.
Typed Letter signed: "Moran", 1 page, 5½x7. London, 1972 January 26. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr. Thayer". In full: "I thank you for your letter of 8th January, and for sending the international postage coupons. I autographed your copy of my book and returned it to you on January 11th, and I trust that you have now received this safely. [Item not included.] With good wishes, Yours sincerely". Charles Wilson (1882-1977), who received the Military Cross for service in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I, was Dean of St Mary's Medical Hospital (1920-1945) and President of the Royal College of Surgeons (1941-1949). His greatest claim to fame, however, was his role as Prime Minister Winston Churchill's personal physician during World War II. Knighted in 1942, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Moran in 1943. He wrote three books, including a war memoir, Churchill at War. Upon his death the title passed to his son, a career diplomat and High Commissioner to Canada. Mailing fold through center. Fine condition.
