The English atheist parliamentarian pens a sentiment
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Thorough/Chas. Bradlaugh", 6¾x8¼. Charles Bradlaugh (1833-1891), co-founder of England's National Reform League was an outspoken atheist, who also argued for women's suffrage, trade union, Irish Home Rule, abolition of the monarchy, and similar causes. His journal, the National Reformer, was prosecuted (unsuccessfully) for "blasphemy and sedition." His outspoken opposition to socialism, however, caused a break with many of his former allies. He was prosecuted (unsuccessfully) for blasphemy and sedition (1868) and obscenity (1877, for mailing birth control pamphlets). Elected to the House of Commons in 1880, Bradlaugh refused to take the religious Oath of Allegiance. He was several times expelled from Parliament, and several times re-elected by his constituents. Finally seated in 1886, he secured passage of a new Oaths Act which allowed public officials and witnesses in criminal trials to affirm, rather than to swear. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
