CHARLES "BUDDY" ROGERS and ROSA PONSELLE
Signatures from "America's Boyfriend" and vocalist Rosa Ponselle
Signature: "Buddy Rogers", "Rosa Ponselle/1936", in ink, 6x4½. CHARLES "BUDDY" ROGERS (1904-1999) played with a California-based swing band in the 1930s, but was better known for his films. He debuted in the silent film Wings (1927), which won the first-ever Oscar as best picture. That same year the actor who would be known at the peak of his popularity as "America's Boyfriend" was paired with "America's Sweetheart", Mary Pickford, in My Best Girl. In 1937, Rogers became Pickford's third and last husband. In later years he would often act as spokesman for his increasingly reclusive wife. Rogers' other films include Abie's Irish Rose (1928), Young Eagles (1930), Golden Hoofs (1941) and his last starring role, An Innocent Affair (1948). ROSA PONSELLE (1897-1981) began her stage career in vaudeville, in a musical act with her sisters. An agent introduced her to Enrico Caruso, who was so impressed with her voice that he secured for her a Metropolitan Opera debut (with Caruso himself in La Forza del Destino). The soprano sang with the Met until 1936, venturing overseas only to London's Covent Gardens and to one performance in Florence (fulfilling a promise to her Italian-born mother.) Ponselle stopped performing after her 1936 marriage; after her divorce (1949), she returned to public life as a booster of the Baltimore Civic Opera and a voice coach, tutoring Beverly Sills and Placido Domingo, among others. Although she never returned to the stage, RCA Victor came to her Baltimore home to record many of her songs in 1954. Pin holes on right margin. Light surface creases. Slightly toned on outer edges. Ponselle's signature faint, but legible. Fine condition.
