CHARLES "BUDDY" ROGERS
Black and white bust view photo of Rogers in a jacket and black tie.
Photograph signed "Hello/from/Buddy Rogers" in black ink. Captioned: "BUDDY ROGERS/and His California Cavaliers/Star of Stage-Radio-Screen". Black ink notations on verso. B/w sepia-toned, 8x10 overall, 7x9 image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Photo by MCA. According to the notations on verso, Rogers gave this photo back stage at Loew's State Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 24, 1936. There were several Loew's State Theatres in the United States in 1936, so we're not sure exactly where Rogers signed this. Rogers (1904-1999) played with a California-based swing band in the 1930s, but was better known for his films. He debuted in the silent film Wings (1927), which won the first-ever Oscar as best picture. That same year the actor who would be known at the peak of his popularity as "America's Boyfriend" was paired with "America's Sweetheart", Mary Pickford, in My Best Girl. In 1937, Rogers became Pickford's third and last husband. In later years he would often act as spokesman for his increasingly reclusive wife. His other films include Abie's Irish Rose (1928), Young Eagles (1930), Golden Hoofs (1941) and his last starring role, An Innocent Affair (1948). Lightly toned. Minor surface creases not seen head on. Otherwise fine condition.
