CHARLES C. CARPENTER
Signature of the Civil War scout who led illegal attempts at settling on American Indian lands during the 1870s. Extremely rare!
Autograph Sentiment signed: "very truly yours/C. C. Carpenter" 3x2 card. Charles C. Carpenter (dates unknown) was a scout for General John C. Fremont during the Civil War. In the 1870s, he led a movement of white settlers to homestead lands reserved for American Indians under treaties with the US government, first in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and then in what would become Oklahoma. Carpenter held no formal military rank, but styled himself a colonel or general. He dressed in imitation of General George Custer. Opinions of Carpenter varied widely, with the Kansas City Times calling him a new Moses and a Cheyenne, Wyoming paper calling him a drunken braggart. In 1879, would-be settlers organized by Carpenter attempted to settle Indian Territory in the future Oklahoma, but were removed by the US Army. Carpenter stayed behind in Kansas, and left the movement after this failure. The "boomer movement," as it was called, continued through the 1880s, meeting success when Congress authorized settlement in the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889, but by this time Carpenter had disappeared from the pages of history. Smeared at "very" but legible. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
