At the dawn of the science-fiction space-age hero, these artists created superheroes for children of all ages to admire. To follow their adventures of peril, battles for justice and protection of damsels, comic strips and comic books portrayed the heroes' stories. These populist comic strip characters were drawn and inscribed by their artists on each piece of original artwork. Charles Beck created Captain Marvel, who made his first comic book appearance in 1940 and was the only superhero to surpass Superman in comic book sales. Shazam! Fred Fredricks took over the artwork of Mandrake the Magician after artist Phil Davis died in 1964: Mandrake was created by Lee Falk in 1934 as a newspaper comic strip hero and thereafter drawn by Davis and Fredericks in strips and books. Jack Kirby created the Incredible Hulk in 1962 and continues to draw the green alter-ego of scientist David Banner-when he's angry over some injustice. Kirby also created Captain America (1941) and the Fantastic Four (1961). Everett Kinstler drew The Shadow along with several other artists over the years: The Shadow-alias Lamont Cranton- first appeared in Fame and Fortune Magazine in 1929 but gained most of its popularity on 1940s radio as a serial program- "What evil lurks in the hearts of mankind...only the Shadow knows!' Superhero Flash Gordon was created in 1934by Alex Raymond, who drew this likeness of Dale Arden, Flash's damsel in distress. He also created the comic strips Secret Agent X-9 (1930), Jungle Jim (1934) and Rip Kirby (1946). Five items. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 40½x22.
