FATHER CHARLES COUGHLIN
Signature on his personal note paper, accompanied by a forwarding note from his secretary (1935)
Signature: "Chas. E. Coughlin", 4x6. Printed text at top: "From the desk of Rev. Charles E. Coughlin." Accompanied by typed forwarding letter from his secretary ("D Rhoades" ?), dated 1935 June 12/ Charles Coughlin (1891-1979) was a Roman Catholic priest whose radio broadcasts in the 1930s attracted as many as 10 million listeners. Coughlin initially supported Franklin Roosevelt, even stating that "the New Deal is Christ's Deal." However, by 1934 Coughlin was moving in more radical directions, founding the National Union for Social Justice. Coughlin and the NUSJ became virulently anti-FDR, anti-capitalist and anti-communist, claiming that capitalism and communism were both Jewish conspiracies. Strongly isolationist, Coughlin began to praise Hitler, inserting whole paragraphs from German propaganda chieftain Joseph Goebbels into his own speeches and even giving the Nazi salute at rallies. Other Catholic leaders began to speak out against Coughlin, and the US government restricted his broadcast rights and then even his mailing privileges. Reduced to the status of a church priest, Coughlin continued to write pamphlets until his death. No information is available on Coughlin's secretary, but at the peak of his influence Coughlin employed 52 assistants to answer his mail. Two filing holes at top margin. Horizontal fold creases - not affecting signature. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
