"From the desk of Rev. Charles E. Coughlin." Charles Coughlin (1891-1979) was
a Roman Catholic priest whose radio broadcasts in the 1930s attracted as many as
ten million listeners. Coughlin initially supported Franklin
Roosevelt, even stating that "the New Deal is Christ's Deal." However, by
1934 Coughlin was moving in more radical directions, founding the National Union
for Social Justice. Coughlin and the NUSJ became virulently anti-FDR,
anti-capitalist and anti-communist, claiming that capitalism and communism were
both Jewish conspiracies. Strongly isolationist, Coughlin began to praise
Hitler, inserting whole paragraphs from German propaganda chieftain Joseph
Goebbels into his own speeches and even giving the Nazi salute at rallies. Other
Catholic leaders began to speak out against Coughlin, and the US government
restricted his broadcast rights and then even his mailing privileges. Reduced to
the status of a church priest, Coughlin continued to write pamphlets until his
death. Horizontal fold creases - not affecting signature. Random ink smudges.
Otherwise, fine condition.
