CHARLES DANA GIBSON
Charles Dana Gibson sends an autograph letter trying to get the
recipient out of trouble.
Autograph Letter Signed: "C.D. Gibson", 2p, 4¼x7. No place,
1891 July 15. To "My dear Mr. Hall". In full: "I have
just read your letter and can see that I have got you in trouble. I can't begin
to tell you how sorry I am. And I shall do all I can to get you out of it and
altho (sic) it will be an impossibility for me to do all the ills. I will
gladly do enough of them to square you with Mr. Depeur. So if you will return
the poem I will do the very best I can. 8 or 10 of the big pictures would do it
don't you think so? Hoping that it will be all right in the end. Very truly
yours," Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) began his 30-year association
with "Life" magazine in 1886, contributing weekly drawings and eventually
becoming the magazine's editor (1918) and owner. The illustrator's "Gibson
Girl", whom he called "The American Girl to all the world", delineated the
American ideal of femininity and captured the spirit of an era. Lightly creased
with folds, not near signature. Fine condition.
