Charles Dana Gibson sends an autograph letter saying that he does not
know the sculptor in the photograph he was sent.
Autograph Letter Signed: "C.D. Gibson", 1p, 8½x11. Seven
Hundred Acre Island, Dark Harbor, Maine, 1937 October 6. On pictorial sheet
to "Dear Mrs. Jones". In full: "Thanks for sending me the photo
of long ago. I have no idea who the sculptor was. With all good wishes".
Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) began his 30-year association with "Life"
magazine in 1886, contributing weekly drawings and eventually becoming the
magazine's editor (1918) and owner. The illustrator's "Gibson Girl", whom he
called "The American Girl to all the world", delineated the American ideal
of femininity and captured the spirit of an era. Lightly creased with folds,
vertical fold at the upper loop of the "G" and the "b" in Gibson. Ink smudged at
the "6" of date, stray ink smudge at lower blank margin. Number written (unknown
hand) in pencil at lower left corner. Fine condition.
