CHARLES DEXTER CLEVELAND
Handwritten letter discussing the title of his new scholarly appointment at NYU.
Autograph Letter signed: "Charles Dexter Cleveland", 1 page, 8x10. New Haven, 1833 June 10. To "My dear Sir", in full: "I have just received yours of the 7th and would remark that as to title etc. I leave the whole entirely to yourself. Knowing that no one, not even our excellent friend Dr. Cox, would do more for my interests and honour. I shall be perfectly satisfied with whatever you may conclude upon. Perhaps however it would be better to have the title either 'Professor of Greek' or 'Professor of Latin' (it is entirely indifferent to me which), and then I could act in either department, as the best interests of the University might require. Be assured that I feel much, the deep interest you have taken in my appointment, and I hope it may soon be in my power to acknowledge it personally, as Professor elect. Mrs. Cleveland is a little better. My good father & mother are now making us a visit. With kind regards to Mrs. Mathews & the family, I remain with the warmest regards yours truly". When he wrote this letter, classical scholarCharles Dexter Cleveland (1802-1869) was leaving Dickinson College, where he had taught Greek and Latin since 1830, for the University of New York. His appointment there proved short-lived; thereafter he was headmaster of a women's school in Philadelphia. Cleveland published numerous books on Greek and Latin literature, but also a study of John Milton. An anti-slavery activist, Cleveland was appointed by President Lincoln as US Consul in Cardiff, Wales. Lightly toned. Creased. Minor notches at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
