CHARLES DUDLEY WARREN
His remarkable signed, ten-page autograph manuscript on "The New England Farmer", addressed to members of the New England Society. A witty and erudite essay, concluding, "Would there were more such farmers!"
Autograph Manuscript signed: "Chas. Dudley Warren", 10 pages, 5¾x9. No place, no date. Titled "The New England Farmer", it reads in part: "...'The New England farmer' has been very much misunderstood. Two radical misconceptions have been at the basis of this misunderstanding: the first was that he was a farmer; the second was that he had a farm. ... Every home had some books, not many but classics, and they were read. Perhaps if there had been more agriculture, there would have been less intellectual life. These excellent farmers were organizing revolutionary acts on their farms, concerning themselves about slavery, and in perpetual agitation over something. Ah, me! Would there were more such farmers!" American novelist and essayist Charles Dudley Warner (1829-1900) edited the Hartford Courant and later Harper's magazine. He also wrote several travelogues, and edited The American Men of Letters. With Mark Twain, he co-authored The Gilded Age (1873), a biting satire about the corruption of post Civil War America. (Mark Twain was a pall bearer at his funeral.) Warner was the first President of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and at his death was President of the American Social Science Association. Lightly worn at corners. Fine condition.
