CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER
His extraordinary 8 pages of ink notes on excavations in Egypt, signed in pencil, and with his pencil annotations throughout the text!
Autograph Manuscript signed in pencil: "Original notes by C. D. Warner", 8 pages, 5¾x9. Detailed ink notes with pencil additions. American novelist and essayist Charles Dudley Warner (1829-1900) edited the Hartford Courant and later Harper's magazine. He also wrote several travelogues, and edited The American Men of Letters. With Mark Twain, he co-authored The Gilded Age (1873), a biting satire about the corruption of post Civil War America. (Mark Twain was a pall bearer at his funeral.) Warner visited Egypt for the first time in 1875. His weekly letters home to the Hartford Courant became the basis of a book, My Winter on the Nile (1876). He returned to Egypt for another long visit in 1881-1882. Warner retained a lifelong fascination with Egypt, and was a Vice President of the Egyptian Exploration Society. This text cites some events and publications subsequent to his own visits, so they may have been used in preparation for another essay. Warner's articles as editor of Harper's through the 1890s include frequent discussions of Egyptian civilization. Lightly worn at corners. Fine condition.
