ALS to an unnamed colleague, thanking him for his vote on a prize award
Autograph Letter signed: "C.E. Brown Séquard", 2p, 4x5¼. Cannes, 1885 December 28. In French, translated: "Dear Sir, The imminent arrival of a new year reminds me sadly that I haven't yet sent as is my usual custom my best wishes for your unfortunate father. I cannot this year let the occasion pass without thanking you for your vote on the Biannual Prize. I appreciate above all the value of your vote under the circumstances that as a member of the bureau of the Geographic Society you voted contrary to your colleagues of that Society. I was unhappily obliged to leave Paris toward the middle of November. I will return when I can. Please accept, dear sir, with my best wishes for the New Year, this expression of my most devoted sentiments." Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard (1817-1894), a pioneering French endocrinologist and neurophysiologist was born on Mauritius. A medical researcher who published over 500 papers, he taught at top-flight institutions in France, Britain and the US, including Harvard and the Paris School of Medicin. Brown-Séquard was renowned for his investigations of physiology and pathology of the spinal cord and his discovery of the essentiality of the adrenal glands. He was the first to posit the existence of what are now called hormones. "Brown-Séquard" written in red ink (unknown hand) at upper left corner. Fine condition.
