Price: $90.00
CHARLES E. CHAMBERLAIN
He writes a letter to the Associate Commissioner of the Office of
Education inquiring the status of an application for school reform.
Typed letter signed: "Charles E. Chamberlain", in blue ink, 1
page 8x10½. Washington, D.C., January 21, 1974. On Congressional
letterhead to "Dear Mr. Goldberg" Herman Goldberg, Associate
Commissioner, Office of Education, in full: "In accordance with the
attached copy of your letter to me of February 23, 1973., the Jackson Public
Schools of Jackson, Michigan subsequently resubmitted the application for
assistance under the Emergency School Aid Act, Title VII. To date no action has
been take on it by the Department. Jackson Public School officials have now
contacted me about this inasmuch as according to a recent announcement from the
Office of Education the Jackson NAACP at 1006 Pigeon street, Jackson, Michigan
(Harold White, Sr.) has received an award of $66,540 to support the program of
the Jackson Public School directed to eliminating, reducing or preventing
minority group isolation...the program for which application is pending in the
Office of Education as per above. Understandably, the school officials find it
difficult to conciliate this group receiving a grant to support the school
program when the schools of Jackson, planning and executing the program have not
yet received a grant. I will appreciate the courtesy of your office in advising
me in regard to this situation so that I can properly respond to the Jackson
Public School officials who have contacted me about it. With my kind regards, I
am, Sincerely Yours," Congressman Charles E. Chamberlain (1917-2002)
represented Michigan's 6th district from 1957 to 1974. An attorney, he served as
assistant prosecutor for Ingham County, city attorney of East Lansing and legal
counsel to the Michigan Stat e Senate judiciary committee. Lightly creased.
