Typed letter signed: "Charles E. Chamberlain", in blue ink, 1 page 8x10½. Washington, D.C., August 23, 1973. On Congressional letterhead to "Dear Dr. Goldberg" Herman Goldberg, Associate Commissioner, Office of Education, in full: "As I am sure you are aware, the Lansing, Michigan, Public School District has been ordered to desegregate its schools by court order just handed down last week. As a result of a telephone call to my office from Dr. I. Carl Candoli, Superintendent of Lansing Schools, it is my understanding that Federal funds are urgently needed to effect this court order are urgently needed for this year but the deadline for applying for such monies expired on June 30th. I am further advised that the Office of Education could change its regulations to distribute appropriated funds to Lansing and other school districts throughout the country facing the same serious problem without Congressional action at his time. I will be most grateful for any consideration you may give the situation toward the possibility of releasing Federal funds which are needed by school districts affected by desegregation court orders since the June 30th deadline. Thanking you for your courtesy, I am Sincerely yours," Congressman Charles E. Chamberlain (1917-2002) represented Michigan's 6th district from 1957 to 1974. An attorney, he served as assistant prosecutor for Ingham County, city attorney of East Lansing and legal counsel to the Michigan Stat e Senate judiciary committee. Lightly creased.
