Price: $280.00
CHARLES E. DURYEA
Inventor of the gasoline automobile, Charles E. Duryea signs in black
ink
Signature: "Chas. E. Duryea". 4½x1
yellow paper, irregularly cut from check. Automobile pioneer CHARLES DURYEA
(1861-1938) built the first successful gasoline automobile in 1893.
Duryea cars won the first U.S. auto race in 1895, the same year Duryea organized
the Duryea Motor Wagon Co., which was the first U.S. corporation for the
manufacture of gasoline powered automobiles. The following year, he sold
the first commercially produced American car. The Duryea Power Co. was
established in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1900. A better inventor than
businessman, Duryea ceased building cars in 1914, but the tough, little Duryea
"Buggyaut" forestalled European competition to give the American industry time
it needed to establish its leadership. Perforation holes upper left into "C" of signature. Lightly creased.
Ink stamp on verso (no show through).
