On letterhead of "The Literary Digest" to The Honorable Louis Alexandre Taschereau, Quebec, Canada. Begins: "Sir". In full: "As you may have noticed, 'The Literary Digest' is publishing each week the correct pronunciation of prominent names that are likely to be mispronounced. Before such publication, our aim is to have the authority of the bearer of that name. To that end, will you kindly indicate as exactly as possible you own pronunciation of your name; also, the syllable that is stressed? Very faithfully yours". At lower margin, Taschereau has written: "Pronounce my name 'Tashrow.'" CHARLES EARLE FUNK (1881-1957) is best known for being Editor-in-Chief of the Funk and Wagnall's Standard Dictionary series. He also wrote a number of books on words and word origins, including Heavens to Betsy!: & Other Curious Sayings, Thereby Hangs a Tale: Stories of Curious Word Origins and Horsefeathers: & Other Curious Words. Canadian attorney and journalist LOUIS-ALEXANDRE TASCHEREAU (1867-1952) was Premier of the Canadian province of Quebec from 1920-1936. He created the Beaux-Arts schools in Quebec City and Montreal and subsidized scientific and literary works. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "un" of Funk. Paper loss at upper right blank margin, which is lightly shaded, portion of lower left blank edge also missing. ¼-inch separation at upper left blank corner, which is lightly soiled and has staple holes, and at lower right blank edge. Pencil notes (unknown hand) relating to the pronunciation of Taschereau's name at lower margin, pencil check mark at upper blank area. Overall, fragile condition.
