3½x2 card. Charles Edward Potter (1916-1979) served as a Republican
U.S. Senator from Michigan from 1952, when he was appointed to fill a
vacancy, until 1959. He had previously served as U.S. Representative from
Michigan from 1947-1952. Potter, a decorated veteran of WWII (Purple Heart,
two Silver Stars), lost both of his legs during the war. A confidant of
President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Potter wrote a memoir, Days of Shame
(1965), about McCarthyism, a topic on which he had frequently advised "Ike".
After his public service, Potter became an industrial consultant and
international securities executive. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
