HUGHES COURT (1937): CHARLES EVANS HUGHES, WILLIS VAN DEVANDER, JAMES C. McREYNOLDS, LOUIS BRANDEIS, GEORGE SUTHERLAND, PIERCE BUTLER, HARLAN FISKE STONE, OWEN ROBERTS and BENJAMIN CARDOZO
The Hughes Court signs a piece of paper.
Signatures: "Charles E. Hughes", "Willis Van Devander", "J.C. McReynolds", "Louis D Brandeis", "Geo. Sutherland", "Pierce Butler", "Harlan F Stone", "Owen J. Roberts" and "Benjamin N. Cardozo", 1p, 8x10½. Headed: "SUPREME COURT, U.S.,/1937." Each has signed next to his typed last name and title ("C.J." for Chief Justice or "J." for Justice). Hughes and these eight Associate Justices served together from 1932-1937. Later in 1937, Hugo Black succeeded Van Devander. CHARLES EVANS HUGHES (1862-1948) was an Associate Justice from 1910-1916. Appointed Chief Justice by President Hoover, Hughes led the Court from 1930-1941. WILLIS VAN DEVANDER (1859-1941), appointed by President Taft, served as an Associate Justice from 1911-1937. JAMES CLARK McREYNOLDS (1862-1946), appointed by President Wilson, was Associate Justice from 1914-1941. LOUIS D. BRANDEIS (1856-1941), who was also appointed by President Wilson, served as Associate Justice from 1916-1939. English-born GEORGE SUTHERLAND (1862-1942), appointed by President Harding, served as Associate Justice from 1922-1938. PIERCE BUTLER (1866-1939), also appointed by Harding, was an Associate Justice from 1923 until his death in 1939. HARLAN FISKE STONE (1872-1946), President Coolidge's only nominee to the Supreme Court, served as an Associate Justice from 1925-1941. In 1941, he was appointed as Chief Justice by FDR, succeeding Hughes. Stone served as Chief Justice until 1946. OWEN JOSEPHUS ROBERTS (1875-1955) was appointed as Associate Justice by President Hoover after Hoover's nomination of John J. Parker was defeated by the U.S. Senate. Roberts, who served until 1945, also led the fact-finding commission that investigated the attack on Pearl Harbor. BENJAMIN NATHAN CARDOZO (1870-1938), the first Jewish Associate Justice, was appointed by President Hoover to succeed Oliver Wendell Holmes. Cardozo served on the Court from 1932-1938. Brandeis, Stone and Cardozo, who were known as the "Three Musketeers", were the liberal faction of the Court, and they favored most of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal" legislation. Van Devanter, McReynolds, Sutherland and Butler, who were known as the "Four Horsemen", were conservatives who were instrumental in striking down New Deal legislation. Lightly creased with folds, upper horizontal fold at the descenders of the "J" and "y" in McReynolds' signature and the ascenders of the "L and "B" in Brandeis' signature. Fine condition.
