Typed Letter Signed: "CFK" as General Manager. One page. 8¼x10¾. Detroit, Michigan. Dated January 6, 1939. On letterhead of Research Laboratories Division, General Motors Corporation to Mr. C.W. Seiberling, Seiberling Rubber Co., Akron, Ohio. In Full: "Thanks for your letter. I saw the other one and asked my secretary to answer it. It will be impossible for me to come to Akron in January. Am sorry. With best wishes for the New Year, I remain, Yours very truly". In 1909, Kettering (1876-1958) and Edward A. Deeds set up the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Co., later known as Delco. Ketteringdeveloped the first electrical ignition system and the first self-starter for automobiles. He sold Delco to General Motors in 1916. In 1920 he became President and General Manager of the General Motors Research Corp., a GM division. For the next 30 years he led teams that developed improved motor fuels, shock absorbers, variable speed transmissions, safety glass and the refrigerant Freon. Kettering retired from GM in 1947. With Alfred Sloan, the President and Chairman of GM for over 30 years, he endowed the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly shaded at upper margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
