CHARLES F. WILLARD. Photograph signed: "C. F. W." B/w, 5x4 overall, image 4½x2. Signed on verso, with a notation in his hand: "From this first landings [sic] stems all arresting devices now used. I was to have made the flight but my plane was a modified Curtiss built by myself with a Gnome engine. Curtiss wanted an all Curtiss so Ely did the test with my landing scheme." Willard (1883-1977), a Harvard graduate and race car driver, was one of the first students taught to fly by Glenn Curtiss. At the 1910 Los Angeles (Dominguez) Air Meet, Willard won the spot landing contest for $250 in prize money. Following the Air Meet Willard worked on ground to air radio telephones, became the chief engineer for Glenn Martin, and designed flying boats with Glenn Curtiss. Willard's ink note shows through faintly. Fine condition.
