Handwritten response to an inquiry about a collection of items he has, saying that a valuable portion has been returned to it's original owner, but that many of the items remain in his possession due to "considerable sums lent to him several years ago, and never repaid"
Autograph letter signed: "C.F. Adams", in black ink, 4½x7¼. December 30, 1852. In full: "Dear Sir: Of Mr Grant's collection, once in my hands, a valuable portion was returned to him. The rest has become mine, in consideration of very considerable sums lent to him several years ago, and never repaid. I am Yr Obt Servt". The grandson of President John Adams and son of President John Quincy Adams, Charles Francis Adams, Sr. (1807-1886) was a politician, lawyer, and diplomat. Although he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1858, Adams is most remembered for his work with historical writing, chronicling the life of his grandfather in a biography that spanned across 10 volumes. This work was the only edition of President John Adam's writings until the family donated the full collection to the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1954. Outside of the House of Representatives, Adams served in other functions, including as Lincoln's minister to the Court of St. James in Britain. He was offered the Presidency of Harvard University, but declined the position. Adams also built the first presidential library in 1870, dedicating it to his father, John Quincy Adams. Torn on left margin. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn. Wax seal affixed to bottom right corner. Small tear on top edge. Tape on right and left top margin. Lightly toned. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
