CHARLES GOODYEAR. Partly Printed Check signed: "Chas Goodyear", 6¼x2½. Washington, D.C., 1860 June 4. Drawn on the Bank of the Metropolis. Filled out by James A. Dorr to himself for $100. Endorsed by Dorr on verso. This check was signed just 27 days before the death of the inventor of vulcanized rubber. Goodyear (1800-1860) began experimenting with rubber while in debtors' prison. Goodyear fought many patent battls and died deeply in debt; the financial rewards from his innovations would come later. "X" cut bank cancellations, not at signature. Light show through of endorsements on verso. Lightly shaded at upper right blank corner. Overall, fine condition.
