CHARLES ATHERTON
The author of gag rules against anti-slavery petitions signs a slip of
paper.
Signature: "Chas. Gordon Atherton/New Hampshire", 3½x1½ piece of
paper. Charles Gordon Atherton (1804-1853) practiced law and served in the New
Hampshire legislature before representing that state in the US House of
Representatives (1837-1843). A states rights Democrat, Atherton
successfully sponsored a series of resolutions forbidding the House to accept
petitions calling for the abolition of slavery. This ban became known as
the "Atherton gag." Atherton later served in the US Senate (1843-1849,
1853), dying in office. Toned at left and right edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
