October 27. To“My dear little "Sheep"”. In full: “How can I thank you for your precious
message, and still more precious thought? My joy if only troubled by the regret of depriving you of
such a dear souvenir! I am really a Shepherd fleecing his sheep. However, many thanks, and God
bless you and yours for ever and especially this coming year”. French composer Charles Gounod
(1818-1893) is best known for his religious works and operas, including Faust (1959),
Mireille (1864) and Romeo and Juliet (1867). Later in his life, Gounod, who had lived in
England from 1870-1875, wrote his famous musical setting of “Ave Maria”. He also wrote
oratorios, symphonies and chamber music. Toned. Left edge frayed. Slightly soiled and worn.
Verso worn and frayed. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
