CHARLES GOUNOD
The famed French opera composer writes to friend about procuring seats to his new show for French Prime Minister Jules Simon
Autograph Letter signed: "Ch. Gounod" in black ink, 2p, 5½x8¼. 1877 February 11. Written on personal stationary with "CG" printed in upper left corner. Concerning arrangements for tickets to the premiere of his opera, Cinq Mars, first performed on April 5th, 1877. To "My dear Henri". In French, translated in full: "I beg you to tell our illustrious and kind Minister that I am very much touched by his request and eagerness. I shall make careful note of it at the theatre. However, as the work is not yet ready, although it must be soon, I fear that I will be giving (for the moment at least) the answer which you yourself gave the Minister, "It's pretty early." At any rate, I will do everything possible to arrange it for Jules Simon, to whom I beg you to give my respects./ Warm regards". French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) is best known for his religious works and operas, including Faust (1959), Mireille (1864) and Romeo and Juliet (1867). Later in his life, Gounod, who had lived in England from 1870-1875, wrote his famous musical setting of "Ave Maria". He also wrote oratorios, symphonies and chamber music. Toned. Normal mailing folds. Worn and soiled. Toned stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
