CHARLES GOUNOD
The French composer praises his friend and colleague Ambroise Thomas's new opera in this letter penned in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "Ch. Gounod", black ink, 2p, 5x8 folded, 10x8 flat. No place, Saturday, 1882 April 15. To “Dear and illustrious friend”. In French, translated in full: "The completely grave and threatening condition in which my brother-in-law Dubufe finds himself deprived me yesterday of the joy of hearing your work and witnessing your triumph. I want to tell you how much I rejoice for you and for all of us for that new honor acquired by the noble and wise French music. Believe me, dear and illustrious friend, your very affectionate". The letter was written to French composer Ambroise Thomas to offer congratulations on his new opera Françoise de Rimini, which was first performed on April 14, 1882, and was an immediate success. French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) is best known for his religious works and operas, including Faust (1959), Mireille (1864) and Romeo and Juliet (1867). Later in life, Gounod, who had lived in England from 1870-1875, wrote his famous musical setting of "Ave Maria". He also wrote oratorios, symphonies and chamber music. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper left of first page and verso of blank integral leaf. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
