The composer writes this letter on one of his monogrammed cards in 1884, asking for
the exclusive German rights to Combat d'Amour for one thousand francs
Autograph Letter signed: "Ch. Gounod". 1 page, 4x3¼ card engraved with Gounod's
monogram. 1884 September 13. In French, translated in full: "Dear Sir, Will you offer
one thousand francs for the exclusive rights in Germany to 'Combat d'Amour?' If you are
so disposed, will you please mail the check for one thousand francs together with the
contract which I shall sign and return to you. Yours truly,". French composer Charles
Gounod (1818-1893) is best known for his religious works and operas, including Faust
(1959), Mireille (1864) and Romeo and Juliet (1867). Later in his life, Gounod, who had lived
in England from 1870-1875, wrote his famous musical setting of Ave Maria. He also
wrote oratorios, symphonies and chamber music. Lightly toned, foxed, stained and soiled. Light
impressions, which touch handwriting, but not signature. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso.
