Charles Mayo sends a typed letter of regret that he has not sent his thanks for the Christmas card earlier.
Typed Letter signed: "C. H. Mayo", 1 page, 7x10¼. On personal letterhead. Rochester, Minnesota, 1934 February 17. To James Francis Cooke, Editor, The Etude Music Magazine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In full: "I am sorry to be so late in thanking you for your lovely card of greeting at Christmas time. It was most unusual in design, and it brought with it a real Christmas message. Only because of my absence these many weeks, you have not had my earlier good wishes for the New Year. It is my hope that 1934 will bring with it many blessings for you and your family. This note is to thank you also for your kindness in placing my name on your courtesy list for The Edtude. I enjoy your articles ever so much, as do the other members of my family. My congratulations to you [sic] son on his clever illustrations. Sincerely yours." Charles Horace MAYO (1865-1939), the younger of the Mayo brothers, originated modern procedures in goiter surgery and in neurosurgery. With brother William James Mayo and father, William Worrall Mayo, he helped the Sisters of St. Francis found St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota in 1889 with the Mayo's as its sole staff. The brothers developed a cooperative group clinic at St. Mary's Hospital, which evolved into the Mayo Clinic. In 1915, they co-founded the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research in affiliation with the University of Minnesota. COOKE, the recipient of this letter wrote and edited several books on music topics. Lightly creased and soiled. Pinhead-sized spots in blank areas. Overall, fine condition.
