Charles Mayo sends a typed letter of thanks for the copy of the
memorial service.
Typed Letter signed: "Charles H. Mayo", 1p, 5¾x7¾. On personal
letterhead. Rochester, Minnesota, 1921 August 13. To Mrs. Franklin K.
Lane, The Connecticut, Washington, D. C. In full: "I am very glad to
receive a copy of the Memorial Service for Mr. Lane; you were very kind and
thoughtful to send this to me. I hope you are well and that you did not have any
undue anxiety concerning the condition of your daughter. Sincerely,"
Charles Horace Mayo (1865-1939), the younger of the Mayo brothers,
originated modern procedures in goiter surgery and in neurosurgery. With
brother William James Mayo and father, William Worrall Mayo, he helped the
Sisters of St. Francis found St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota in 1889
with the Mayo's as its sole staff. The brothers developed a cooperative group
clinic at St. Mary's Hospital, which evolved into the Mayo Clinic. In 1915,
they co-founded the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research in
affiliation with the University of Minnesota. Fold crease not near signature.
