CHARLES H. PARKHURST
The politician and clergyman signs this letter in response to a
request
Autograph letter signed: "C.H. Parkhurst" in black ink. 4½x7.
New York, March 8, 1900. To: "Mr. O.P. Goimby". In full: "My
dear sir- Your request is a very simple one and I accede to it with pleasure,
subscribing myself. Yours very sincerely." Charles H. Parkhurst
(1842-1933) was an American clergyman and social reformer. Interested in
municipal affairs, Parkhurst was elected president of the New York Society
for the Prevention of Crime in 1891, and he challenged the methods of the
city police department. Although scholarly and reserved, he preached two
sermons in 1892 in which he attacked the political corruption of New York City
government. Backed by the evidence he collected, his statements led to
both the exposure of Tammany Hall and to subsequent social and political
reforms. Toned. Horizontal crease in center. Left edge slightly frayed.
Otherwise, fine condition.
