Guiteau signed and dated this card in 1881, the year he shot and killed President Garfield.
Signature: "Charles Guiteau/1881". 2¾x1½ card. Guiteau (1841-1882, born in Freeport, Illinois), a lawyer, bill collector and disappointed office-seeker who had sought to be appointed U.S. Consul at Paris, shot James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, on July 2, 1881, at the Baltimore and Potomac Railway Depot in Washington, D.C. Garfield died on September 19, 1881. Guiteau's trial opened on November 14, 1881. He was found guilty on January 25, 1882. On June 30, 1882, Garfield's assassin, Charles J. Guiteau, was hanged at the jail in Washington. Lightly toned.Adhesive residue on verso, which shows through card. Discoloration on left edge from adhesive (does not touch signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
