Charles Jared Ingersoll (1782-1862) of Pennsylvania served in the US House of Representatives (1813-1815), chairing the Judiciary Committee, before becoming US Attorney for Pennsylvania (1815-1829). After serving in the state legislature and as a Secretary of the Legation to Prussia (1837), he was returned to Congress as a Democrat (1841-1849), becoming Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs (1843-1847). President Polk nominated him to be Minister to France, but the Senate refused to confirm him. Left edged frayed. Toned and soiled.
