Charles John Kean (1811-1868), born in Ireland, was the son of famed
actor Edmund Kean. He made his London stage debut in 1827, and performed
with his father for the first time in Glasgow in 1828. He made a successful
US tour in 1830, and was a big success as Hamlet in London in
1838. He married actress Ellen Tree in 1842. In 1850 he became
manager of London's Princess Theatre, where he staged gorgeous Shakespearean
revivals dedicated to "authenticity." Exhausted from a world tour in 1866,
he died at age 57. Vertical crease through slip (lightly affecting signature).
