CHARLES KEMBLE
The English actor accepts a dinner invitation, pleased that it will
include a reading from Much Ado About Nothing
Autograph Letter signed: "C. Kemble", 1 page, 4½x7¼. 44
Mortimer Street [London], 1846 January 15. In full: "I shall have
great pleasure in dining with you and Mrs. Pryor on Wednesday the 21st Inst.,
and am very glad that you have selected 'Much Ado About Nothing' for the
reading; as it is one of my particular favorites. I am, sir, your obedient
servant". Charles Kemble (1775-1854), part of a famous English acting
family of his father Richard Kemble, made his stage debut as Orlando in As
You Like It (1792). Two years later, he appeared for the first time in
London, playing Malcolm to brother John Phillip Kemble's Macbeth. He
married actress Marie Therese de Camp in 1806. Kemble's production of
Cymbeline (1827) launched an English fashion for historical authenticity
in drama. Kemble retired from the stage in 1840, but was in demand thereafter
for readings from Shakespeare. He himself was no doubt giving the reading at the
above mentioned dinner. Left edge frayed from binding. Corners lightly worn.
Crease near top left corner. Adhesive residue at face (lightly affecting
signature). Mounting residue at verso. Ink notes bled through on face (lightly
affecting letter, not affecting signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
